How is this done?
The first appointment will involve an assessment of
your personal needs for counselling. You will build up an idea
of what is involved and you will be able to make up your mind
if this is a person you can work with. It is important to be
clear about what you want and what the counsellor is able to
offer. Your relationship with the counsellor is at the heart
of the work.
If you wish to continue, arrangements will be made for a further
five sessions, ending with a review and decisions about future
progress. Relatively immediate issues may be dealt with effectively
in six sessions. Sometimes more sessions are needed in order
to probe deeper, long-term issues.
Can the counsellor help me with my particular situation?
A counsellor does not take the role of an expert but as someone
that works with you to explore your particular situation. She
therefore uses her training and various skills to help with situations
as varied as coping with anxiety and bereavement, relationship
difficulties, personal problem-solving, educational dilemmas
as well as helping victims of crime and trauma.
What type of counselling does Physic provide?
Although the counsellor has some knowledge of other perspectives,
her focus is on humanistic therapy. This is sometimes called
the 'third force of psychology', in contrast to psychoanalytic
and behavioural approaches. Humanistic therapy is influenced
by existential and phenomenological philosphy and it emphasises
human goodness, creativity, growth, choice and wholeness. It
includes the approaches of Carl Rogers (person centred), Albert
Ellis (rational-emotive), Eric Berne (transactional analysis)
and others. This emphasis on the person, in the here and now,
compliments the Centre's emphasis on the individual's own natural
healing processes.
What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?
The theories and practices of counsellors and psychotherapist
overlap. However, psychotherapy
is more clearly derived from the work of Sigmund Freud and other
psychoanalysts. Psychotherapists tend to attach more importance
to the unconscious and past experience in determining current
behaviour.
Is counselling confidential?
Our counsellor is a member of the British
Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and adheres to
the BACP Framework of Ethical Practice. This means that everything
you discuss is confidential between you and the counsellor. Ther
are certain legal exceptions, which the counsellor will clarify
with you at the first session. All BACP therapists need to be
in supervision, which is a form of consultative support. However,
a supervisor is also bound by rules of cofidentiality, names
are never used and in practice there will be no breach of trust.
Will I become dependent upon counselling?
Feelings of reliance upon the counsellor do sometimes occur and,
although quite normal, may be worrying. This will be acknowledged
and tackled during sessions, as counselling aims to help you
to increase your self-awareness and independence.
