Therapies > Aromatherapy
The ancient art of aromatherapy combines the healing properties of aromatic plant essences with massage, making good use of our sense of smell and touch. It can be very nurturing physically, emotionally and mentally.
Aromatic herbs have been used all through history to cleanse and heal both body and mind. The ancient Egyptians used aromatics for healing and cosmetics. China has also had a long tradition of aromatherapy.
Fragrant Aromatic Plants are used to create Essential Oils

Arab physicians were the people who harnessed the antiseptic powers of many essential oils. The Normans had a hand in bringing aromatherapy to Britain.

Renée Maurice Gatterfossé reminded us this century of the healing powers of essential oils and Jean Valnet used essential oils to treat wounded soldiers in the First World War. Marguerite Maury devised special massage techniques for applying essential oils along nerve centres of the spine. Robert Tisserand is a British aromatherapist who has done a lot to generate popular interest in aromatherapy.

What are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are the fragrant liquid components of aromatic plants, trees and grasses. The oils are contained in oil glands or sacs in various parts of the plant - depending on the type of plant. In some plants it is the petals, rose for example, others the leaves as in eucalyptus, others in the bark - sandalwood and in some such as the lemon it is in the fruit.

How are the oils extracted?
The classic method is by steam distillation. Others, such as citrus oils, are extracted through a form of squeezing called expression. Oils have to be stored carefully to keep their healing qualities.

How do the oils work?
They act on the central nervous system through the sense of smell (the nerves for smell are the shortest and most direct route deep into the brain) and also through the skin. Some will aid relaxation, eg camomile and rose, others can stimulate as in the case of rosemary and black pepper while others like lavender will tend to balance the body.

What happens in a Session of Aromatherapy?
The environment is warm, safe and comfortable. After a confidential consultation oils will be mixed up to suit your needs and you will receive a massage on your back, neck, shoulders, legs, arms, abdomen, face and head. Many people have regular aromatherapy massage to sustain a sense of well being. It is for all age groups and makes an ideal gift.
